I Don't Watch Fortune-Telling Segments on Morning TV

I often see fortune-telling segments, such as horoscope rankings, as part of morning TV programs.

I consciously choose not to watch them.

The reason is simple. If the result happens to be good, that's fine. But if I'm told, "Your luck isn't very good today," I might start the day feeling a little down.

Just as the day is about to begin, I might start thinking:

  • "Maybe nothing is going to go well today."
  • "Maybe I should be more careful today."

If I start my day thinking like that, it somehow feels like a waste.

There's Nothing Wrong with Watching Fortune-Telling

Of course, I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with watching fortune-telling on TV.

If you enjoy it by thinking, "I came in first today!" or,

"My lucky item is ○○? Maybe I'll take it with me today."

then I think that's a perfectly nice way to enjoy fortune-telling.

I'm not someone who dislikes fortune-telling, either.

In fact, I'm quite interested in it.

It's just that, in my case, I know that the results might affect my mood, so I choose not to watch fortune-telling first thing in the morning.

How Can We Make Use of a "Bad" Fortune?

This makes me wonder.

Since TV makes it so easy to check your fortune every morning, perhaps there is another way to make use of it.

For example, suppose you're told:

"Your luck isn't very good today."

Instead of thinking,

"I'm going to have a terrible day."

you could take it as:

"Maybe I'll try to be a little more careful today."

For example:

  • Double-check your work one more time than usual.
  • Choose your words a little more carefully when talking with others.
  • Check your belongings before leaving home so you don't forget anything.

If you look at it this way, having a "bad fortune" isn't necessarily such a bad thing.

Fortune-Telling Doesn't Decide Your Future…

I think it's best to think of fortune-telling not as something that determines your future, but rather as an opportunity to think about your own actions.

It's not about doing nothing because you've been told that your luck is bad today.

Nor is it about assuming that everything will go well simply because you've been told that your luck is good.

Instead, you can think:

"Maybe I'll pay a little more attention to this today."

Just turning your attention toward your own day in that small way may be a good balance for me when it comes to fortune-telling.

…But Even So, I Still Don't Watch Morning Fortune-Telling

So, in the end, I still don't watch the fortune-telling segment on morning TV.

However, if someone were to tell me,

"Your fortune was ranked number one today!"

…I have to admit, that would probably make me a little happy.
